Norman (q.v.) adventurer like his uncle Bohemund (q.v.), both of whom participated in the First Crusade (q.v.). Renowned for his bravery, he was among the first to surmount the walls of Jerusalem (q.v.) in the siege of 1099. After the Turks (q.v.) captured Bohemund in 1101, Tancred administered Antioch (q.v.) for him, actively resisting Byzantine encroachments on Laodikeia and in Cilicia (qq.v.). Rejecting the Treaty of Devol (q.v.), Tancred continued to rule Antioch until his death in 1112, a year after Bohemund's death in Apulia (q.v.).
